Responsibilities:
Serves as a Clinical, Charge and Triage Nurse in the Emergency Department.
As a Clinical Nurse, provides the full range of professional nursing care and treatment to a wide variety of critically ill patients due to military training accidents, motor vehicle crashes, gunshot wounds, suicide attempts, cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, drug overdose, etc.
Provides an advanced level of emergency nursing care.
Independently intervenes using established protocols to prevent deterioration of the patient's condition or restore hemodynamic stability and provides continuous observation and monitoring until patient is transferred for definitive treatment.
As Charge Nurse, performs delegated administrative duties to ensure appropriate staff supervision and makes critical decisions about staffing issues to ensure safe, quality, and timely patient care.
As Triage Nurse, performs patient assessments and independently determines and assigns priority of care based on patient's presenting symptoms and physical manifestations, using established protocols as a guide.
MAJOR DUTIES:
1.
As an Emergency Department clinical nurse, provides an advanced level of specialized nursing care to critically ill patients who may present with potentially life-threatening conditions and require the employment of either Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support or trauma protocols.
Assists providers with complex, specialized, and potentially life threatening procedures such as defibrillation, cardioversions, insertion of chest drainage tubes, tracheostomies, or initiation of mechanical ventilation to restore normal physiological function or prevent deterioration of patients condition.
Independently recognizes life threatening situations and acts to correct these according to established protocols.
Administers critical care drugs as ordered, which require specialized knowledge of the monitoring and infusion equipment, and of the effects, side effects, doses, and dosage calculations due to the potency and potential to cause serious complications.
Administers oxygen, intravenous (IV) fluids, blood transfusions and all types of medications during emergent events by various routes to include intravenous, intraosseous, subcutaneous, intramuscular, by mouth, and rectal.
Operates specialized medical equipment such as resuscitators, defibrillators, electrocardiographs, oxygen apparatus, intravenous pumps, and rapid intravenous infusers.
Implements physician orders and initiates a nursing plan of care for individual patients.
Assesses patient status and keeps physician informed of any change or need for additional treatment.
Changes dressings, preps wounds, removes sutures, inserts urinary catheters, applies binders and bandages, applies splints, and performs tracheostomy care.
Performs procedures to collect blood, tissue, urine, stool, or sputum specimens.
Prepares specimens for processing and transports to lab as required.
Monitors and obtains test results as soon as available and informs physicians promptly to facilitate patient care.
Conducts an assessment of the patient's/family's learning ability and provides instructions appropriate to the patient's or family's ability to understand the diagnosis, treatment, medications, expectations, or follow-up procedures.
Reinforces provider's instructions and encourages patient in maintenance of health and self-care.

As a Charge Nurse, performs a variety of administrative duties as an extension of and in support of the Clinical Head Nurse.
Delegates nursing care assignments considering patient acuity, staff skill levels, and scope of practice and responsibilities to ensure timely, safe, and effective patient care.
Supervises other nursing and paraprofessional staff and monitors their duty performance to ensure appropriate protocols, standards, policies, regulations, or reporting and documentation requirements are met.
Conducts ongoing assessment of unit operations throughout the shift and makes adjustments in staffing patterns as necessary for smooth patient flow.
Ensures that staff document legibly, accurately, and completely all nursing interventions in the patient record.
Ensures that appropriate patient responses to medical/surgical emergencies are documented.
Verifies and annotates all providers' orders written during tour of duty.
Advises providers of significant changes in patient condition in a timely manner.
Responsible for narcotic and medication accountability.
Monitors and evaluates staff during orientation/preceptorship periods and recommends modifications in orientation/preceptorship program as dictated by the individual staff's learning needs or demonstrated ability.
Responsible for all nursing operations within Emergency Medical Services (EMS), in the absence of the Head Nurse.
Receives, investigates, and acts on patient complaints pertinent to Emergency Medical Services matters.
Coordinates with the Blanchfield Army Community Hospital (BACH) Nursing Supervisor to ensure appropriate patient admissions or transfers to and from the Emergency Department.
Arranges transfer of patients to appropriate patient care areas upon release by the physician.
As ACLS provider, holds primary responsibility for critical patients during transfers within the hospital.
Coordinates patient transfers with the Emergency Medical Services transport unit and other departments within and outside of the military health care system.
Functions within the scope of practice of a professional Registered Nurse and within hospital regulations and policies.
Coordinates patient care activities and ensures effectiveness of Emergency Medical Services administrative operations.
Participates in process-improvement activities to include conducting chart reviews, identifying trends, and reporting corrective actions.

As a Triage Nurse, independently conducts patient assessment and assigns priority of care based on patient's presenting signs, symptoms, or clinical manifestations using established protocols as a guide.
Administers medications, based on protocol, for certain conditions to prevent deterioration of patient's condition.
Notifies provider immediately and takes appropriate emergency action for life-threatening conditions.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
US Citizenship requiredCandidate must have a current, active, valid, certificate, unrestricted license, or authorization to practice as a Registered Practitioner in a U.
S.
State, District of Columbia, Commonwealth, territory, or jurisdiction.
A minimum of 1 year experience.
